All Innotek dog fence systems come with 500 feet of 20 GAUGE wire (this is the thinner wire). It is not recommended to join 20 gauge and 18 gauge wire together as it affects the performance of the system. If you want to upgrade to a thicker wire 18 gauge( a more durable wire) you will need to order enough for the 18 gauge to cover your whole boundary length. (check this chart #ACRE-LINEAR FEETOF WIRE NEEDED FOR FENCE
1/3 acre =500ft (1 roll), 1 acre=850ft, 2 acres=1200ft, 3 acres=1500ft, 4 acres=1700ft, 5 acres=1900 ft)
If you already have a fence, particularly a chain link, it is not advisable to weave the wire on the fence or attach it to the fence, as it will affect the radio signal . It is best to put the wire at least a foot in front of the fence. This is also better for when you are training your dog and you want to show him that crossing the wire will give him a correction, he can cross it without the fence being in the way and he will be able to see that he gets a correction there. This is particlarly good for dogs that jump over or dig under the fence.

I use this system to keep my akita in a 10 acre area. It works great. I really like the alarm system for wire breakage and power outage. We have two dogs, a large black lab mix and a border collie mix. We installed the IUC 4100 over 2 acres of our property. This product turned out to be an excellent choice for us. The training DVD was great and the one time I had to call for support I received excellent advice. Both rechargable collars have given us no problems (1 1/2 years old) and they get there share of abuse - our dogs are very active.
One note on this technology if your not sure about its effectiveness. We also have a few free ranging hens for eggs. The dogs will not cross the fence even when the hens walk near the line. Now that's temptation! **** 5 Star Rating
